About the Opportunity
Join Platform Services and help build one of Flight Centre Travel Group’s most commercially significant products, the Global Savings Service.
As a Senior Java Engineer, you will work on complex travel technology challenges, transforming ambiguous problems into reliable, production-grade solutions that deliver accurate savings insights to customers globally.
Working within a small, distributed Java squad, you'll contribute to technical direction, drive engineering quality, and deepen your expertise across airline distribution, fare pricing, and large-scale integrations. This is a unique opportunity to take ownership, solve difficult technical problems, and make a measurable impact on a global platform.
What you will do:
- Design, build and maintain features and services within the Global Savings Service from concept through to production-ready delivery
- Develop high-quality, scalable solutions using Java and modern engineering practices
- Integrate with complex SOAP and REST APIs across GDS platforms and third-party vendors
- Interpret and reconcile fare and pricing data across multiple formats including NDC, EDIFACT and GDS-specific structures
- Own the reliability, accuracy and quality of the components you deliver
- Create meaningful automated tests and proactively manage failure scenarios and edge cases
- Document technical decisions, business logic and domain knowledge to support team capability and business continuity
- Leverage AI-assisted engineering tools, including Claude Code, as part of daily development workflows
- Contribute to technical architecture, design discussions and code reviews
- Provide technical guidance and constructive code review support to engineering peers and consultant engineers
- Collaborate effectively across time zones with engineers, product stakeholders and technical leaders
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear and understandable language for non-technical audiences
What you will need:
- Solid experience building and maintaining production services as a Java Software Engineer
- Strong expertise with Java and object-oriented design principles
- Experience working with complex SOAP and REST API integrations
- Proven ability to solve problems within technically and commercially complex environments
- Experience making sound engineering and architectural decisions
- Strong understanding of software quality, testing and reliability practices
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience documenting technical solutions and domain knowledge
- Comfortable working within a geographically distributed team
- Exposure to airline distribution, fare pricing or travel technology domains including GDS, NDC, EDIFACT and ATPCO is highly regarded
- Experience with Spring Boot is advantageous
- Experience working with Azure cloud services is advantageous
- Knowledge of Ruby, Elixir or .NET is beneficial
- Experience with AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code is advantageous
- Demonstrated ownership mindset, curiosity and commitment to continuous learning
